When public places become support for arts: Out in the cold

The main issue concerning arts nowadays is its difficulty of access. Arts in general have become something for which you need the financial needs to have access to. It creates inequality when it should bring people and culture together.

Out in the cold is a project created by a fourth-year Warwick student: Ollie Noble. He has decided to use the walls of his university as a way to invite people to immerse themselves in a ‘place of boundless human expression, accessible to all — to those both inside or outside the world of its creation.’ The whole exhibition will be free and any donations will be given to ‘Leamington Winter Support’.

To make it happen, Ollie and his team are organising a large projection The piazza is where the majority of students meet each other for lunch or coffee since all the shops are situated there. It is the most social place on campus. Therefore, the projection will be in operation on the piazza’s big screen during two weeks. The aim being to encourage diverse student population to engage with contemporary art.

Accordingly, starting from the 26th February and for two weeks, the students will be experiencing ‘transportive hours’ while standing and watching the screen.

While there is no set theme, all the videos will have a strong critical eye tackling important political and philosophical ideas. What matters most is that the students are able to get behind and engage with the videos. Whether this is through absurdism, politics or any other theme we leave for the artist to decide. It can also be as challenging as the artist likes as long as it remains sharp. The whole screening will be featured with the team of Keep The Faith’s DJs; the disco night of the student town: Leamington Spa.

It will be an exhibition setting a screening at the heart of the university on the piazza. It will bring together video works by artists from around the world and recent participants in the Venice Biennale, including Mel O’Callaghan (AUS), Taus Makhacheva (RUS) and Nayoung Jeong (ROK) amongst others, Out in the cold looks to re-contextualize contemporary art, taking it out its comfortable gallery spaces and culture-capitals and placing it amongst unknown friends.

Interviews with artists detailing their methods, crafts and outlooks will also be shown and submissions are invited.

These kind of events raise a hope to break down the boundaries weighed upon people, and in doing so, to give them an opportunity to claim their own stake of life.
